Oakwood School Council
Dear Oakwood School Parent,
Hello and welcome to Oakwood! As a parent registering your child for school, you will receive lots of written material about the school, your child's education, and rules and regulations that guide the school's activities. The Oakwood School Council would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to your School Council and outline its purpose and role. We invite you to help enhance your child's educational experience at Oakwood through participation in school and Council endeavours.
What is School Council?
Education is a shared responsibility involving students, teaching staff, parents and community members. Oakwood School Council brings together all those that are interested in helping to ensure a positive learning environment for the students at the school and provides a forum for discussion and decision-making regarding school policies and activities.
Who is involved?
Membership on the Oakwood School Council consists of a majority of parent representatives, one teaching staff member, one non-teaching staff member, and one community representative. Elections for parent representative positions are held annually as part of the September meeting.
When and where are the meetings?
The Oakwood school Council meetings are held once a month - usually the third Monday of each month (September to June) at 7 p.m. in the school library. Please consult the school calendar for the exact date. Everyone is invited to attend and participate in school Council-directed activities. Everyone is encouraged to speak up at Council meetings.
Communicating with School Council
Besides the monthly meetings, you can communicate with School Council, raise concerns or questions and/or keep up with its activities through contacting any member of the elected Council either in writing (the school secretary can pass these on) or informally, through speaking with Council members directly.
Other Ways to Get Involved
If you are unable to formally participate in any of the committees or attend the Council meetings, you are encouraged to take advantage of the many volunteer opportunities that arise as a result of the planned events of the committees. You can do this by submitting your name and phone number at a Council meeting, with the school secretary, with any member of Council, or in response to a call for volunteers.
We hope we've answered some of your questions about the School Council. There is even more information available in the School Council Handbook located in the foyer of the school or through any elected member of Council.
We hope to see you at School Council events soon.
And again, welcome to Oakwood School!
